10 Reasons I’m Not The Photographer For You

I’m not the family photographer for everyone.

And that’s a good thing.

When you're choosing a family photographer, you're not just hiring someone to press a shutter. You're inviting someone into your family’s story. You’re trusting them with your memories. Your legacy.

So let me help make your decision easier.

Here are 10 very real, very honest reasons why I might not be the right photographer for you - and why that’s totally okay.

  1. You want everyone to look perfect.
There’s no such thing. My sessions are about teasing out honesty through play. For me it’s about making memories as well as photographs. So expect more snuggles, giggles and heartfelt details over matching grins.

  2. You want a sneak peek as your photos are being taken.
If you feel you’d need to see the back of the camera screen as your portrait session is evolving then being photographed on film is likely not for you. I like to encourage the families I work with to embrace the fact they can’t see their images yet, take the opportunity to let go of any anxiety they might have and instead simply enjoy the experience.

  3. You want your photos taken at noon on a sunny day.
Light is everything in film photography. I chase the golden, dreamy kind and tend to avoid harsh overhead shadows.

  4. You want to be photographed in a studio with props and backdrops.
I shoot on location - fields, forests, cities, beaches, homes - places that matter to my clients. I love to root my photographs in their location so they have a strong sense of place. Your story deserves a meaningful setting.

  5. You’re not into nostalgia.
My work is romantic, timeless and rooted in emotion. If you prefer sleek edits which follow the latest trend, then my style might feel too sentimental for you.

  6. You’re looking for hundreds of digital images delivered the following day.
Film is a slow, magical process. I shoot carefully and intentionally. Once your session is complete your film is then hand-developed and scanned by my pro lab in sunny California. All of this takes time, but the results are worth the wait!

  7. You prefer photoshopped perfection.
If you’re looking for skin smoothing, head swaps or retouching I might not be your girl. I believe in honest beauty, not flawless fiction.

  8. You’re not a fan of grain, light leaks or soft focus.
Film has texture, soul and occasionally it’ll throw a surprise curveball such as a light leak! To me this adds to its charm. However if you prefer ultra-sharp, high contrast images then a digital photographer may be a better fit for you

  9. You want quantity over quality.
I might deliver fewer photos than a digital photographer, but every frame is thoughtfully composed and meaningful. No fillers - just the moments that matter.

  10. You’re looking for a vendor, not a collaborator.
I don’t just show up and shoot. I invest in your story. In the time we have together my aim is to connect, build trust and craft artful photographs that celebrate your family. If you’re looking for a straightforward transaction, then I’m likely not the family photographer for you.
